Schools Tours

During Carlow Arts Festival, VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art will be replete with more fresh new exhibitions than at any other point in the year. The children can see Ben Long’s gigantic nine-metre tall sculpture of a horse made out of scaffolding. Or be awestruck by Polly Morgan’s sculpture fashioned from 2428 cast crow femurs, or experience the black humour in Frances Upritchard’s monkeys. Eight illustrators (many of them cartoonists) show their latest work, including Children’s Laureate Niamh Sharkey.

In the Link Gallery, a wall sculpted in wood in a studio in Borris, by wood artists from Ireland, Australia, Hawaii, France, the US, Wales and Taiwan, will be on display. Finally, the Digital Gallery will house the successful entries (including the winner) of this years Open Submission Art Competition.  The adjudicators of this years Open Submission are inviting 5 notes artists to participate including Dorothy Cross and her splendid Shark-Heart Submarine 2011 (consisting of shark’s heart in a glass jar).Maximum 30 students

Pottery Workshop in association with IWA Carlow

The children will get an opportunity to create a unique three-dimensional artwork by shaping clay. The “plasticity” of clay makes it the ideal material to sculpt into any shape and forces the children to think about structures, shapes and forms. Projects may include items such as animals, tiles, leaf dishes and jewellery. The pieces will then have to dry and be fired in the kiln and will not be available to bring home until this process is complete. The work shop will also include a demonstration of the kiln. The workshops are the suitable for children from 8 – 12 years. Maximum of 10 children per workshop.
